liberty plus gets warm, then gas out fault

Postby lingon27 on Sun Oct 04, 2009 3:56 pm

I have a liberty plus rescued from someone's trash. It will start up (fan on, clicking, clicking stops, then gets warm) with the light a solid orangey for 25 minutes, then it goes through three lighting/clicking cycles and then it goes to gas out fault blinking. The light never turns green after 10 mins, as it should. What is it that tells the machine to go green? The temperature?

Here are the things I've done to it:
- Battery. Came with one with two dead cells, soldered up a new battery, and procured a 9v charger. Didn't know the right polarity, so it had 9v with the wrong polarity plugged in for a bit - perhaps this caused some issues. In this process I have had the power light fault code several times, so I know that error message still works.
- Cleaned out nozzle (Soaked separated nozzle and inside filter thing in mineral spirits, blew it out with air compressor)
- Used the gas reset red plastic thing many times.
- New tank refill.
- Tried turning tank upside down and shaking to reset any overflow valve issue.
- Turned gas knob on only 1/3 turn until it lit, and then turned on all the way.
- Starting the machine with a 9v power supply plugged in as well as the battery.

Here are the things I've tried to test:
- Thermistor when cold is 280 kohms, after running for around 10 mins is 35 kohms and rising as it cools. And if this had something wrong, wouldn't I get the thermistor error code?
- Did the gas through regulator hissing check, seemed ok.

But it clearly does light, since it gets warm and smells. In fact, it smells like sulfur, which is a little worrying that the catalytic converter has something weird with it. But why would that keep it from the running green light?
It seems to me that either something stops working when it gets warm enough or whatever signal the machine needs to get to turn green after 20 mins is not happening. Or there's something weird with the tank or the regulator.

We have a defender that we took apart to clean the nozzle, but that is a major operation vs cleaning the nozzle of the liberty plus, so I would prefer to get the liberty plus working. The defender appears to need disassembling and cleaning every 2 months.

Thanks for any help.
