Liberty is not catching anything

Postby Steve_NL on Wed Jun 25, 2008 12:11 pm

Hi all

My Liberty purchased in June 2006 worked well the first summer and last year there was a major drop off in catching. On startup last month the unit would come on for 7-10 minutes then shut down and a showing a high temperature code. Ambient temperature was 13C and unit in shade. I cleared the carbon out of my liberty and soak the gas nozzle and cleared it with compressed air. It has been running for 4 days now in same location as in June 2006 and catching almost nothing. When I check on it I am being harassed and bitten constantly by black flies, no-se-ums and mosquitoes (peak season) while standing alongside of the liberty. There is less than a teaspoon of dead flies in the bag. What else could be wrong. Wind still blowing in same direction as 2006 and the propane tank is full and the operational code is showing all is working. Desperate in Canada. :?:

Using a fresh octenol cartridge?

Did you do the tissue test for airflow? Maybe there's some debris between the plume intake and the fan?

Hi Russ

yes I am using a fresh Octenol cartridge. Can you please elaborate on how the tissue test works?

Thanks

Hold a single ply tissue or toilet paper near the inlet opening. See if there's any airflow inward. It may or may not have enough suction to hold the paper in place but you should at least be able to verify there is inflow.

The fact you get bit while you're standing next the machine is good, because it shows they are being attracted to it.

Does it sound like your fan is running full speed?

Hi Russ

I disconnected the black tube at the inlet and held a tissue across it and it is sucking it up into the nozzle. Fan is working great and nothing blocking it. I checked the bag since yesterday and it may have another 3 dead flies; lots here since we are at peak time.

Is there a simple way of checking that the igniter is working without taking it apart? The only code showing is green so the unit thinks all is well.

Thanks

Steve

If you can feel heat coming off the MM, and/or if you see a water droplet after it starts up, there is a flame - which means the igniter works.

faulty igniter

Postby Steve_NL on Thu Jun 26, 2008 7:51 pm

Hi Russ

Took the top off, disconnected the gas, removed igniter from its chamber and powered it up. After ~ 5 minutes the code went green, no heat produced by igniter and no fault code. I repeated with igniter back in chamber, attached propane and powered up;heard gas nozzle click, fan working fine, no heat felt. Later, I even swapped the wiring around on the igniter where it attaches to controller board but still no heat. All cases I left it running for 15 minutes for each trial. Strange that I am not getting a fault code?

I will order igniter through ebay.

Thanks

Steve

I am wondering if a new ignitor ended up working for you. Sometimes it could be that the engine is producing a poor ratio of CO vs. CO2, which prevents a good catch...
